San Francisco band, Electric Color Wheel, has decided to reduce their caffeine intake after it was discovered that it made several of the band members jittery and tense. Due to the new caffeine constraints, the band will reduce their appearances at Sacred Grounds Cafe to once every two months.
When asked about this new, more restrictive schedule, bass player Patrick Mahon said, "My hands were shaking so much that my 32nd notes were starting to sound like 64th notes, and I didn't want to let caffeine hinder my playing as it has in so many other unfortunate cases."
This may be good news for fans, however, as fewer cafe appearances mean more electric shows, which have come to be favored over their acoustic performances.
Fresh back from a trip to the High Sierra Music Festival, the band is ready for sleep, hot showers, and maybe a little more sleep. The four-day music festival was, as expected, a hotbed of extreme musical talent that was showcased on a continuous basis for about 19 hours each day.
When the guys in Electric Color Wheel weren't taking in the shows, they put on a few shows of their own, and spawned several jam sessions with other talented musicians. No, there was no official booking, and none of the actual High Sierra stages were used, but the industrious bandmates were able to create places to perform and be heard by many music fans. The band was very well received by the festival attendees who gathered around and eagerly took Electric Color Wheel stickers and copies of the band's new CD, Trips To The Sticks, which was put together specifically to distribute at the festival.
Trips To The Sticks is a collection of recordings made at band rehearsals during the months of May and June, 2003. This CD provides a true glimpse into the band's current live sound, as it is presented as performed, with minor post-production and no editing. Trips To The Sticks contains original songs, as well as some covers, and is topped off with studio versions of the Electric Color Wheel songs, Hide Your Eyes, and The Pier.
This CD has been released as a limited edition, and the entire first batch was given out at High Sierra. Some more copies will be produced, but there won't be very many, so be sure to ask for a copy soon if you want one.
Electric Color Wheel is changing so much these days that you need a scorecard to keep track of the band lineup. In January, Patrick and Winter joined on bass and drums, respectively. Shortly thereafter, Deirdre and the band parted ways for a variety of reasons that don't need to be printed here. Then Winter went to join forces with a band fronted by a good friend of his. Now Jeremy, Patrick, and Dave remain.
Just to keep things interesting, the band is looking to add a singing guitar player and a set drummer so as to fill the slots vacated by the departing members. You will be updated right here when new members are found.
In the meantime, rehearsals are being held to continue Patrick's training as he strives to become a true jedi bass player, fluent in all Electric Color Wheel songs. Plus, all three members are learning some new songs so that the band's loyal fans will never get bored.
Of course, the guys are going to keep on gigging. Far be it from them to let a little thing like major lineup changes stop them from bringing the music out to the people. Keep your ears open. Electric Color Wheel will be all over town.
Deirdre, the singing, songwriting, guitar-strumming girl from Electric Color Wheel, celebrated her birthday in grand fashion this weekend, by organizing an acoustic showcase featuring several of the band's favorite local artists. The all-star lineup, which included Electric Color Wheel, performed a succession of 15-minute sets, and created a vibe that was absolutely incredible.
Veteran rock star Lee Mallory started things off with three great songs, and was followed by a beautiful set by Toy Yamaji that had everyone in the place singing in harmony like a well-rehearsed church choir. Andrew DuBrock enlisted the services of Dave "Djembe" Coan and then treated everyone to some classic Andrew DuBrock material, plus a newer song that once again had the crowd singing. Bryan Harrison kept the tempo up while he sang about his parking ticket problems and the observations of a grizzly bear.
Following a cake break, Electric Color Wheel premiered a brand new song featuring lyrics by Kathryn Rickard and music by Deirdre. They also did a light-hearted song by Jeremy and were joined by Andrew DuBrock for a great rendition of Whatever The Season. Next up was Christopher Sharron who played his guitar in his own special way, and then reverted to playing it in a way much more similar to the way other people play, ending with a crowd-pleasing interpretation of David Bowie's Major Tom. Kim Theurich then became one with three gorgeous songs that you could almost see flowing through her body and spirit. Topping off the evening was Jeff Belbey who put together one of his renowned temporary bands that included Jeremy, Bryan Harrison, and Dave "Djembe" Coan.
Everyone agreed that it was an amazing night of music and community. People were still talking about it later that night over drinks. They may still be talking about it. With any luck, Electric Color Wheel will be able to arrange more of these top-notch showcases.
The new Electric Color Wheel EP, Acoustic Appetizer, was released on July 3rd as planned. The crowd at Nickie's eagerly snapped up a bunch of copies and sought autographs from songwriters Jeremy and Deirdre, who performed each of the songs on the EP that night with help from Dave "Djembe" Coan, Jacob Kensinger, and Mike Toth.
So far, the feedback about the EP has been great. People are quite pleased with the new recordings and the great acoustic arrangements, not to mention the great artwork.
Copies of Acoustic Appetizer are available at Electric Color Wheel shows, and will soon be available online. If you don't have your copy yet, hurry up and get one so you can see what you're missing!
Electric Color Wheel, the greatest, and most modest, band to walk the planet, has issued the following statement:
We in Electric Color Wheel are proud to announce that we have completed a 5-track EP made up of acoustic versions of Electric Color Wheel songs. We made it our goal to have this thing ready for release on July 3rd in anticipation of distributing it at the High Sierra Music Festival over the holiday weekend.
Lo and behold, we have achieved our goal. The first 50 copies of the EP, entitled "Acoustic Appetizer", are neatly boxed up and ready to go, and more are being manufactured at the Electric Color Wheel CD Factory in beautiful Daly City, CA. We're really happy with how the recording came out, and we can't wait for everyone to hear it!
The songs included on the EP are: The Pier (short and long versions), Whatever The Season, Hide Your Eyes, and Evasive. With the exception of the electric bass track on Hide Your Eyes, everything was recorded using acoustic instruments and human vocals. We tried using non-human vocals, but the hyenas wouldn't sing on pitch, the houseplants wouldn't sing at all, and the lions were too darn unruly to keep in the studio.
We will officially release the EP this Wednesday, July 3rd at Nickie's, which is located at 460 Haight St. near Fillmore. Deirdre will host the Nickie's open mic that night, so you can hear us play, and you can get a CD of our latest musical works. Open mic signups are at 7:30pm, and the music will start sometime around 8:30pm.
We hope to see you on Wednesday night!

What we're talking about here is a time when you can count on finding a live Electric Color Wheel show on a regular basis. That's right folks, the Sacred Grounds Cafe has decided to make Electric Color Wheel their house band...during the first week of the month...on Saturday.
Ok, so it's not a nightly gig, but this is a start. Electric Color Wheel will play the first Saturday of the month at the Sacred Grounds Cafe, with an opening act starting at 7:00pm followed by Electric Color Wheel at 8:00pm.
So if you want something fun to do before it gets very late on the first Saturday of any given month, stop by Sacred Grounds and check out the Electric Color Wheel show. If you're looking for more of a commitment, stop by every month this year.
Last Saturday Electric Color Wheel made their commercial radio debut on KGO Radio AM 810. Jeremy and Deirdre, armed with Dave Coan and his djembe, entered KGO Studio #2 at 6:45am and proceeded to take control of the airwaves several times over a two hour period.
The band demanded that radio listeners send large sums of money to the station, and used their most energetic songs to startle the sleepy people of the bay area into compliance. The masses responded and the money came streaming in.
While this may sound like some sort of sinister, diabolical plan, but it was all for a good cause. On that fateful Saturday morning, Electric Color Wheel became a part of the KGO Cure-A-Thon, an annual event that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Jeremy, Deirdre, and Dave played six songs, which were each separated by KGO radio personalities holding auctions, requesting pledges, and talking to a survivor of lymphoma. During their two hour stint, Electric Color Wheel and their KGO conspirators raised $22,000 for the cause. The members of the band all think that was a pretty good way to spend two hours. Don't you agree?
After a short tour of the Pacific Northwest, Electric Color Wheel is back home in San Francisco. The band's time on the road proved to be a whole lot of fun, and productive too. Stops in northern California and Oregon featured live performances, visits to prospective future venues, and time spent with friends, both old and new.
Having planned the trip with a small amount of advance notice, the group left home without much lined up in the way of live performances. They knew of open mics in Eugene and Portland, but nothing of the venues, and there was nothing setup at all in northern California. "In Humboldt we just went from place to place until someone let us play," remarked Jeremy.
That place was the Six Rivers Brewing Company in McKinleyville, CA. There turned out to be an open mic that night, and only three acts signed up, so Electric Color Wheel ended up playing a full set and a couple of encore songs. The crowd was modest, but appreciative, and everyone had a good time.
In Eugene, Electric Color Wheel performed at Cafe Paradiso as planned. This was a performance at a very popular open mic that featured a number of talented acts, and a very nice sound system. The high turnout made for a very short set, but such is the life of the open mic performer.
On their third and final stop, Electric Color Wheel got the rock star treatment. The people at the 45th St. Pub & Grill in Portland, Oregon went wild for the duo. Following Jeremy & Deirdre's eight-song set, the locals bought promo CD's, asked for autographs, and went on and on about how much they liked the music. Many new friends were made in Portland, and our electrically colorful heros can't wait to go back up there.
Jeremy, Deirdre, and Tracie would like to thank all the people who came out to hear the music, everyone that let them sleep on their couches, futons, and floors, and the venues/hosts that gave Electric Color Wheel a place to play. Everyone had a great time on the little northwestern tour, and the group hopes to get on the road again before too long.
The road beckons, and the core members of Electric Color Wheel are ready to answer it's call. That's right, on Monday Feb. 18th, Jeremy and Deirdre will be heading northbound out of San Francisco with their guitars, some promo CD's, and their friend Tracie.
The first stop is Eureka, CA or somewhere in the vicinity. There is no confirmed show in the area at this point, but the duo is bound and determined to perform somewhere. So if you're in Humboldt county on Monday, ask around for Electric Color Wheel and you may just find some great live acoustic music.
On Tuesday Feb. 19th, the band's tourcar, Tulula, will stop in Eugene, OR. Jeremy and Deirdre will be at the Cafe Paradiso open mic that night. All people in Eugene who like good music are urged to attend.
After that, it's off to Portland, OR on Wednesday the 20th. For the benefit of Portland's music lovers, Jeremy and Deirdre will be at the 45th St. Pub and Grill open mic. The people of Portland must not miss this rare and special event!
Not content to play exclusively in the bay area, Electric Color Wheel recently took their crowd-pleasing sound to sunny southern California for a weekend of music and fun. Nearly making it as far south as San Diego, the band stopped in Fallbrook and Carlsbad just long enough to amaze the locals, and to celebrate the birthday of Deirdre's cousin, Mychael.
Accompanied by Tracie, their incredibly supportive friend, Jeremy and Deirdre found their way to an open mic at the Packing House in Fallbrook. Accustomed to playing open mics that are populated by dozens of musicians waiting their turn to play a mere one or two songs apiece, the group was pleased to find a bar full of music loving locals who were actually there to listen. After initially suggesting that the bay area duo play four or five songs, the host allowed the show to go on until nine songs had been played. It was obvious that the Electric Color Wheel sound was welcome in Fallbrook.
After getting warmed up with the Saturday night open mic, Jeremy and Deirdre performed a great set the following night at Mychael's party in his Carlsbad home. It was a full house, and the crowd had a great time, as did the band. With any luck, Electric Color Wheel will be returning to the San Diego area sometime in the upcoming months.
Intent on releasing some new music in the year 2001, Electric Color Wheel has just put out a recording of a new song called Whatever The Season. It's a song by Deirdre, that features her on lead vocals and thus brings out a part of the band's style that is not evident on the other available recordings.
Gorgeous vocal harmonies and strong lyrics make Whatever The Season a song that's sure to please.
In order to bring out the best in the song, Jeremy and Deirdre enlisted the help of several friends who came into the studio and recorded parts to be added to the mix. Dave "Djembe" Coan did the percussion track, Andrew DuBrock did a bunch of cool acoustic guitar licks, and Andrena Douglass sang some high vocal harmonies. The overall mix of talent has made for a great version of an excellent song.
This recording of Whatever The Season was done entirely with acoustic instruments, exposing even more of the diverse Electric Color Wheel sound, and more representative of the band's current live sound. The band plans to release more acoustic recordings, while continuing work on "electric" material at the same time.

It's Thursday, or Day Three, if you will. I still can't believe the things that have happened this week. At the same time, I can't help but believe, because I am surrounded by news of the horrific results of extreme violence. I see the people on tv digging through a huge mess of what used to be a pair of proud towers. I hear people crying and searching for loved ones that they know they probably won't see alive again. I have friends that saw the towers burn and collapse. How could I not believe?
Yet it all seems so unbelievable. This is the stuff movies are made of. It's just like they do it in Hollywood. They managed to get the shot on the first take, and they even got one of the planes from several angles. It's the perfect action movie. But this time it's all too real. Superman never showed up.
All day long I've been filled with a deep sadness. I feel such a strong empathy for the people who were hurt or who lost their loved ones that it feels like I've sustained a loss as well. Yesterday I was pissed off and ready to go kick some hijackin' ass, but today it's just sadness. It's almost overwhelming to think of the incredible losses suffered by so many people. I feel for every one of them. If I feel it way over here in California, then it must be absolutely horrible for the people that are there. I can only hope for them to see better times.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the rescuers who went into the towers to aid in the evacuation. Those are some amazing people. I don't know many people who would have the cajones, let alone the selflessness to do what they did. Those are REAL heros. They aren't phony comic book heros with special powers to make things easy for them. They are the real deal. They put it all on the line for our sake. How many people do you know that would do that? How many people do you know that would go up into a burning skyscraper to drag your sorry butt out of there? I'll bet you don't know many. I know I don't know many. That's why the people that do that are heros in the highest degree, and they deserve our gratitude and respect.
Additionally, I'd like to recognize all of the people that are working on the cleanup and dealing with all of the logistics related to getting things taken care of and moving ahead. I can only imagine how much work there is to be done. It is an immense undertaking, and the people making it happen are wonderful.
Now I can only hope that more survivors are found very soon.
Today our country was attacked by unknown assailants. The two tallest buildings in New York were destroyed, and with them went the lives of many people, perhaps thousands. We in Electric Color Wheel wish to extend our most sincere sympathies, deepest regrets, and best wishes to all who were in any way harmed as a result of the unbelievable atrocities that have been committed.
An attack upon America is an attack upon all Americans. We must all support one another and support our government in the attempt to identify and punish the hateful people that are responsible for this tragedy. We are all saddened on this day, but we must be strong and move ahead to better times.
In a continuing effort to ensure that the world is filled with music, Jeremy and Deirdre are now taking the sounds of Electric Color Wheel right out into the city itself. Armed with a very quiet generator and the trusty, not so quiet Electric Color Wheel sound system, the duo is completely mobile and ready for action.
Experts agree that it is beneficial to fill the streets with music without using any of California's precious electricity. However, some are concerned that gasoline costs may bankrupt the band. There have also been allegations that evil forces lurking within the city are attempting to silence the music with a barrage of costly parking tickets.
When asked about the possibility of federal financial assistance, the white house declined to comment. Sources say that the president may take a few days to make a final decision on the issue because he is concerned about possible outrage from Peru and Ecuador if he allows an American band to compete with Peruvian and Ecuadorian bands for the attention of tourists in Fisherman's Wharf.
After taking a break during the holidays, Electric Color Wheel is back in action. We've booked some shows for your entertainment. For our friends who've been ever so supportive, we are adding new songs to our current playlist to keep things fresh. But don't worry, we will still play the old favorites along with the new stuff. We wouldn't want to deprive anyone of their required doses of Storm and Evasive.
We are also continuing to work on our recordings. Look for some new original songs to be released in 2001.
We interrupt your regularly scheduled news program to bring you this message, just in from Electric Color Wheel headquarters.
We've not exactly been in hiding, but it has been quite some time since we released any new music. Hopefully you will soon understand why, for the wait is now over. Our new song is called Hide Your Eyes and you can download the MP3 right here.
This song is the first of our songs written after the relocation to San Francisco. It took a long time to record due to its complexity, but if you sit back and listen to it with a pair of good headphones (good speakers would suffice if need be) then you will see that it was worth the wait. Hide Your Eyes is made up of approximately 90 tracks of vocals, instruments, and effects. Luckily, not all 90 parts are playing at the same time.
Hide Your Eyes has been a part of our live show for quite some time now. We're glad to finally have a version you can take home. Enjoy!
All of San Francisco stood in shock as the locally based band, Electric Color Wheel, seized control of the airwaves with help from inside sources at KUSF 90.3 FM. The incident took place at 1:00am on Saturday, April 17th on the Blue Moon radio show hosted by Jersey JD.
The band had a simple mission: to spread the music
Operation KECW was carried out through an exceptional 3 song live performance backed up by a spin through Ice Turtle and Weeping Fig as heard on the band's demo CD. The message was clear...everyone must come to see our show or else be condemned to an eternal hell of listening to muzak versions of rap songs.
When it was all over, the people of San Francisco breathed sighs of relief, as they knew their needs for musical entertainment were now in good hands.
In the same sort of way you would go get a second dog to give your first dog some company during the day, the website has gone out and won itself another award to be a friend to our first award. And so, this site now bears the Adnan's Web Site Bronze Award. As our site gets even cooler, we may even get the Silver or Gold award.
Here's what Adnan had to say about this website...
I have (along with my reviewers) seen your fine site.
Congratulations... Your super web site has won my award.
You have truly impressed us. One of the reviewers commented:
This web site has nice layouts and graphics and is easy to navigate.
My son Adib and daughter Tina also liked your page A LOT!
Once again congratulations and thank you for putting some thing so interesting on the internet.
Countless hours of hard work have paid off with a bit of recognition from the WWW community as this website has been awarded the Starsaber's Award Of Excellence. A look in the ECW email box revealed this email earlier today:
CONGRATULATIONS! JEREMY
Your web site has won the StarSaber's Award.
My compliments on a job well done and thank you for making the World Wide Web a better place.
George Rowe
StarSaber's Award
And so, with that we are hoping to start a new tradition of award winning excellence. Thanks George!
The Ice Turtle is here! Yes, it's true...Electric Color Wheel has just released a new demo version of the crowd pleasing "Ice Turtle" for everyone to download. This is the coolest little version of the song about the coolest little turtle that there's ever been. It must be checked out!
Once again, Jeremy and Jacob have put their all into engineering and producing a recording themselves. While talking about the process of do it yourself recording, Jacob remarked, "You can keep changing little things forever, but eventually you just have to decide it's good enough or you'll never finish." And Jeremy's thoughts on the recording? "I'm really pleased with the way the song came out. I've got some new ideas for things to add, but those can go into the CD version. I'm just glad that we finally have a version recorded that I can be proud of. We finally feel like we've reached the point where we don't have to make excuses for the quality of our recorded sound, which is something we've been looking forward to for quite some time."
While "Ice Turtle" has a very different feel and energy than the recently released "Weeping Fig," the guys think that the two songs are stylistically consistent within the overall Electric Color Wheel sound. They have long felt that there are two sides to ECW which travel from slow and moody to lively and back again, sometimes within a single song. According to Jeremy, "We get a lot of influence from music that tends pretty mellow and spacy like Pink Floyd and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, but we're also into a lot of rock and other energetic stuff, so we try to mix up what we do to reflect more than a single aspect of our influences."
However you look at the band's dualism, they have a sure hit with "Ice Turtle" which will be followed up by more incredible songs. Don't miss out!
Electric Color Wheel is proud to announce the public release of a brand new demo version of "Weeping Fig." The new version is the shortest incarnation of the song to date, clocking in at 3:32, and is the first recording of any of the band's songs that is really appropriate for use on a "quality" demo. The entire demo version of "Weeping Fig" is now available for download free of charge.
This recording, which was performed, engineered, and produced entirely by Jeremy and Jacob marks the beginning of a new era for the project. "It took us a long time to come to terms with the fact that our most important job is to make good recordings," Jeremy remarked. "Historically we have spent huge amounts of time working on our live show and recruiting and teaching numerous players, but not much time has been working on our recordings. Now we're trying to maintain a more balanced approach with a bit more time spend on the recording side of things until we have a product that we feel is at a level that will generate gigs and sales."
After a long and somewhat disappointing recruitment effort, the guys decided that it was time to move on and start recording without other band members. The hope is that the new recordings will attract high caliber players and further interest in the project.
After having no permanant rehearsal space for quite some time, Electric Color Wheel has located and rented a rehearsal studio in San Francisco. The space will host rehearsals on a regularly scheduled basis and will provide some degree of permanance as opposed to doing the hourly rental trip and the early evening, guitars only, practices in Jeremy's typical neighborhood of crunched together houses, which have been the rehearsal methods employed lately.
If you're chuckling and wondering why we think this is news then you should try to rent permanant rehearsal space in the bay area sometime. Then when you don't find anything available for months, try to convince the neighbors in the houses that are 2 inches away from yours that hearing the same songs over and over again, day after day, isn't really very annoying, since they are, after all, great songs. Or you could try moving all of your gear to (and from) an hourly place every time you want to practice, paying up to $30 a session. Trust us, it's news!
The auditions have officially begun as the band has spent the last week checking out musicians. Drummers and guitarists alike have responded in droves to the recruitment effort which began on July 7th.
When asked how the auditions were going, Jeremy commented, "It's much too soon to tell, but there are some promising players. We still have a lot of people to send tapes to and meet with, so we don't really have a list of people to choose form as of yet. In any case, we're happy with the enthusiastic response of the local musicians."
While the auditions continue, the world must wait to see the next incarnation of this incredible musical project.
It's true, band founders Jeremy Hanberry and Jacob Kensinger have moved to the bay area in California and are continuing to work on old and new Electric Color Wheel songs.
Their parting with former guitarist Nick Lewis and drummer Adam Brown was not unfriendly. "It's a long story, but basically a lot of things in life were pointing to the bay area, musically and otherwise and we made the choice. The other guys decided not to go along, so things are changing," remarked Jeremy.
The relocation has opened up two positions within the band for which recruitment has started. According to bass player Jacob, ECW is looking for permanant band members who will be down for the long haul and not people that just want to show up for a gig every now and then.
Anyone interested in checking out the open guitar and drum positions should send email to the band. Email should state name, instruments played, prior band experience, and the ideal band situation sought.
